Today I’m excited to be sharing some of our favorite Christmas math-themed books. This post also includes a printable free Christmas counting book for kindergarteners to use in your homeschool!

Free Christmas Counting Book for Kindergarteners
This activity was designed for kids in kindergarten, who are practicing counting and writing numbers. The emergent reader book is also great for kids who are just starting to learn how to read! This activity can be adapted for kids from preschool through 2nd grade using the suggestions included in this plan!
What You Need:
- This Christmas reading and counting free printable (Get it below!)
- Crayons, scissors, and tape
- A stapler
Prepare:
- Gather your supplies.
- Print the blank book pages.
How to Use this Free Christmas Counting Book for Kindergarteners:
In this activity, your child will be creating their very own Christmas counting book! First, work with your child to count the objects on each page and write the number in the blank. Then, your child can color and decorate their book. Make sure they write their name on the front cover as the author. After they are finished, you or your child can cut apart the pages. Staple them together in order to make the finished book. Once the book is finished, encourage your child to read it to you. They might also enjoy reading the book to a sibling, a grandparent, a pet, or even their favorite stuffed animal! Reading the book multiple times will help your child gain confidence as a reader.
Adapt the Free Christmas Counting Book for Kindergarteners for Your Kids
For Younger Kids:
Help them create the book.
Younger kids may need help writing the numbers in the book. You can draw the numbers using a dashed line and ask your child to trace the line if you would like. Younger kids may also need help cutting out the pages. All kids will probably need help using a stapler to staple the pages of their book together.
Help them read the book.
If your child isn’t reading yet, you can read the book to them.
For Older Kids:
Read the book without the pictures.
In this story, the pictures give lots of clues that make it very easy to read. To make the story more challenging to read, take the pictures away! You can cover the picture on each page with a sticky note, or use the single page version of the story that’s included in the full 12 Days of Christmas Math printable. Can your child still read the story, even without the clues from the pictures?
Practice writing numbers and number words.
In the full 12 Days of Christmas Math printable, I have included 3 different worksheets for practicing handwriting and writing numbers that go along with this story. This is a great chance for your child to practice writing their numbers, and writing and spelling the number words.
Extensions: Writing a story
Encourage your child to make up their own Christmas story. You can make a counting book of your own, using different Christmas themed objects, or a story book- whichever your child would prefer. Help your child write down their story if they need it, and then illustrate each page. Staple the finished pages together to make another Christmas book to read to family and friends.
What Your Kids Will Learn with this Free Christmas Counting Book for Kindergarteners
This activity helps kids to practice reading and writing numbers and number words. This is an important skill for kids to learn so that they can read and solve math problems on their own, and write their answers down. However, kids do not need to be able to read and write numbers before they can do the math. It is ok for you to help them read math problems and write down their answers at first as their reading and fine motor skills are developing. Eventually, their reading and fine motor skills will catch up to their math skills.
