Seashell Identification Worksheet and Activities

One of my family’s favorite things to do during the summer is to go to the beach, and my kids love to pick up rocks and shells. That’s why I’m so excited about this seashell identification worksheet pack!

These activities were designed for kids of all ages, to help them learn to identify the seashells they find! Both readers and non-readers can use the seashell identification worksheet!

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the seashell identification worksheet pack. The seashell identification guide and checklist will work best if you print them on thick cardstock and laminate them.
• Cut apart the 3 part flashcards.

Use the Seashell Identification Worksheet Again and Again

It is easy to turn this seashell identification worksheet pack into a resource that you can use over and over again in your homeschool! Try these tips to make this a reusable resource.

• Print the pages on thick cardstock to make them more durable.
• Laminate the pages with a single sheet laminator and laminating pouches.
• Or, put worksheets in a dry erase pocket to protect them.
• Kids can write on laminated pages with a dry erase marker and erase when they are done.

How to Use the Seashell Identification Worksheet

The seashell identification guide and checklist are designed to help your kids identify the shells they find at the beach. One way to use the worksheets is as a scavenger hunt. See how many of these different kinds of shells you can find during your trip to the beach. Kids can use the checklist to keep track of which shells they have found and which ones they are still looking for. There is also space to record how many of each different kind of shell they find.

These sheets can also be used after your trip to the beach is finished. Ask your kids to sort the seashells they collect by kind. Then, use the seashell identification worksheet to learn the names of the different kinds of shells you collected.

The seashell identification worksheet pack also includes a set of Montessori style 3 part cards. These cards are designed to help your child learn the names of the different kinds of seashells.

To use the 3 part cards, cut apart the cards into their 3 pieces. Start by studying the cards with the picture and name on them. Talk about the cards with your child and help your child pronounce the name of the shell.

Once your child is familiar with the names of the shells, you can use the other 2 cards as a game. Mix up the picture cards and the name cards and see if your child can match the name to each picture. You can also hold up the picture cards and ask your child to tell you the name of the shell.

Adapt the Seashell Identification Worksheet for Your Kids:

For Younger Kids:

Help them read.

If your child is not yet a reader, a parent or older sibling can read the names of the seashells to them. Siblings can work together as a team to hunt for and identify seashells.

For Older Kids:

Graph the shells.

Older kids can practice their math skills by counting and graphing the seashells they find. Sort the shells by kind and count how many of each kind you have collected. Then, kids can make a graph showing how many of each kind they found. Older kids can calculate the percentage or ratio of their collection that is made up of each kind of shell.

Label your collection.

Older kids might also like to label their seashell collections with the names they are learning. They can show their labeled collection to a friend, neighbor, or relative to teach someone else about what they are learning!
