This is Day 4 of the Fun Summer Worksheets for Preschoolers series! You can check out the other posts in the series to find fun no-prep lessons to keep your preschooler learning all summer long! Learning letters of the alphabet and developing pre-reading skills are important for preschoolers all year long. That’s why I’m so excited to share this cute summer alphabet tracing booklet. This is a fun and easy way for kids to practice their letters this summer!

These activities were designed for kids in preschool, to help them learn about numbers and counting from 1-5. They can be adapted for toddlers through 1st graders using the suggestions included in these plans!

Use the Alphabet Tracing Booklet Again and Again

It is easy to turn this alphabet tracing booklet into a resource that you can use over and over again in your homeschool! Try these tips to make this a reusable resource.

• Print the pages on thick cardstock to make them more durable.
• Laminate the pages with a single sheet laminator and laminating pouches.
• Or, put worksheets in a dry erase pocket to protect them.
• Kids can write on laminated pages with a dry erase marker and erase when they are done.

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the alphabet tracing booklet. You may want to print on thick cardstock or laminate the pages to make the booklet more durable.
• Cut the pages apart.
• Staple the pages together in order.

How to Use the Alphabet Tracing Booklet

The summer alphabet tracing booklet is designed to help preschoolers learn letter names, sounds, letter formation, pre-reading skills, and much more! Here are some things your child can do with your alphabet tracing booklet:

Practice Tracing the Letters

Each page includes a large capital and lowercase letter with directions for tracing. Kids will start at the dot and follow the direction of the arrow. This is a great way for children to learn how to form the letters correctly. It is important that kids use the correct strokes in the right order when they are practicing handwriting, so this is a great skill to learn now.

Practice Writing the Letters

The alphabet tracing booklet includes a line on each page for your child to practice writing the letter they are learning. There are several letters for your child to trace, as well as extra space to write the letter on their own. Your child can use a pencil or crayon to do this one time, or you can laminate the pages and use a dry erase marker to practice again and again.

Recognize Capital and Lowercase Letters

Each page of the alphabet tracing booklet includes both capital and lowercase letters. This is important so that kids will start to associate the capital and lowercase letters together. They should know that both a captial letter and its corresponding lowercase letter make the same sound. This is important for pre-reading, because most books contain both capital and lowercase letters.

Learn Letter Sounds

The alphabet tracing booklet includes a summer themed object that starts with each letter of the alphabet. By associating these pictures with each letter, kids will start learning the sounds that each letter makes. They will also start to recognize the beginning sounds in each word. You can emphasize these beginning sounds as you read the booklet with your child. You might even ask your child to read the booklet to you!

Adapt the Alphabet Tracing Booklet for Your Kids:

For Younger Kids:

Read to Your Child.

If your child is younger, you can start using this resource by just reading the book to your child. Point out the pictures and ask questions to keep your child engaged while you read.

You can also point to each word as you read it. Even if your child is not a reader yet, pointing to the words will help them understand that each group of letters is a word and makes a unique sound. They will also begin to understand that text is read across from left to right.

For Older Kids:

Ask them to read.

Your older child can read the alphabet tracing booklet to you. This is a great book for beginning readers because kids can use the pictures for context clues to figure out the words.

Practice handwriting.

Older kids should focus on handwriting when they use the alphabet tracing booklet. Ask your child to trace the letters, and check to make sure that they are using the correct strokes in the right order to form each letter. You might even ask your child to copy the word for each picture on the blank line!
