Sports Worksheets for Preschoolers

With the Summer Olympics coming up, my kids have been even more excited than normal about sports. Today I’m excited to be sharing some fun sports worksheets for preschoolers that your kids will love!

These activities were designed for kids in preschool, to help them learn about letters and numbers. They can be adapted for toddlers through 1st graders using the suggestions included in these plans!

What You Need:

• The printable sports worksheets for preschoolers (get them below!)
• Scissors
• Clothespins (for the sports clip cards)
• Play dough (for the sports counting mats)

Use the Sports Worksheets for Preschoolers Again and Again

It is easy to turn these sports worksheets for preschoolers into a resource that you can use over and over again in your homeschool! Try these tips to make this a reusable resource.

• Print the pages on thick cardstock to make them more durable.
• Laminate the pages with a single sheet laminator and laminating pouches.
• Or, put worksheets in a dry erase pocket to protect them.
• Kids can write on laminated pages with a dry erase marker and erase when they are done.

Sports Clip Cards for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the clip cards. You may want to print them on thick cardstock or laminate them to make them more sturdy.
• Cut out the clip cards.
• Put clothespins in a basket.

What to Do:

Clip cards are a fun way for preschoolers to practice their letters and numbers. Kids will find the answer from among the 3 choices at the bottom of each card. Then, they can clip a clothespin on the correct answer.

Because clip cards don’t require writing, they are perfect for preschoolers. Kids who aren’t writing yet can use the clothespins to record their answers to each problem. In addition, using the clothespins is a great way for them to practice fine motor skills. This will help your preschooler develop the hand strength they need to write letters correctly.

What they will Learn:

These sports themed clip cards come with 2 different sets. The count and clip cards ask preschoolers to count the number of objects on the card. Then, they will need to recognize the matching number and clip their clothespin in the correct space.

The alphabet clip cards are designed to teach kids how to match capital and lowercase letters. They will look at the capital letter and then put their clothespin on the corresponding lowercase letter. This is an important pre-reading skill, since most books contain both capital and lowercase letters.

Sports Matching Puzzles for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the matching puzzles. The game will work best if you print the puzzles on thick paper or cardstock and laminate the pages to make them more durable.
• Cut out the puzzles. Cut the pieces apart.
• Spread out the puzzle pieces on a table.

What to Do:

Matching puzzles are another fun hands-on way for preschoolers to practice new facts that they are learning. These matching puzzles are easy to use. Kids will just find the 2 pieces that match and put them together. They can use process of elimination to check their work. Each piece should have a match.

What they will Learn:

The number matching puzzle is designed to teach preschoolers about counting and recognizing numerals from 0-9. In order to solve the puzzle, kids will need to be able to count groups of up to 9 objects. They will also need to be able to recognize the numbers.

The number matching puzzle also includes a set of cards for 0. Save this puzzle until you have introduced the idea of zero to your preschooler. You can tell your child that “0 means none.” Kids should match up the 0 to the blank puzzle piece as a reminder of this concept.

The alphabet matching puzzle will help kids learn to match capital letters and their corresponding lowercase letters. This is an especially good practice for kids who tend to reverse letters like b and d.

Sports Counting Mats for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the counting mats.
• Laminate the counting mats or put them in dry erase pockets or page protector sheets.

What to Do:

Counting mats are very versatile, and there are a lot of different ways that you can use this resource with your preschooler. Here are a few ideas.

• Use a dry erase marker to trace the numbers and number words. This is a great way to practice handwriting and teach kids how to form the numbers correctly.
• Use playdough to form the numbers. This will help your child learn and remember the shape of each numeral.
• Use counters to fill in the ten frame with the correct number of objects. This will help familiarize your child with a ten frame, which is helpful in math in preschool and beyond.
• Add the correct number of objects to the picture. This is a fun way to practice counting and to remember that numbers have a one-to-one correspondence with objects when counting.

Adapt the Sports Worksheets for Preschoolers for Your Kids:

For Younger Kids:

Use fewer pieces.

Instead of using all the counting mats or matching puzzles, consider working with just the numbers from 1-5. Or, use just the letters in your child’s first name. Working on learning a large amount of facts in small groups can make a daunting task more manageable for a younger child.

For Older Kids:

Put them in order.

Once your child has completed the number or letter cards or puzzles, ask them to arrange the cards in order. This is a great way to practice alphabetical order and number order as well.

Practice math facts.

Consider using these resources to help your child practice addition. You could ask your child to add the numbers on two clip cards together. Or, to solve the matching puzzles but then tell you what one more than each answer would be. The ten frames on the counting mats are great for math fact practice as well.
