Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism

The book Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism was written by Israel Wayne and published by Master Books in 2023.

This book is designed to be a year-long Bible study. It is divided into 52 chapters, one for each week of the year, that each answer a question kids might have about God, Jesus, the Bible, or Christianity. The consistent structure of the book makes it easy to use as a part of a weekly Bible study routine.

Each lesson is written in a question and answer format, a method that mirrors how Jesus taught His disciples. This format encourages interactive learning and critical thinking, as it invites kids to think about and discuss important Biblical questions. Each lesson starts with a Life Question that will be answered during the week’s lesson.

He is also an author of books about Biblical worldview and homeschooling including Education: Does God Have an Opinion? and Raising Them Up: Parenting for Christians. His resources encourage parents and families to think about every decision they make through the lens of a Biblical worldview.

“God’s Word applies to all areas of life. There is not one facet of our existence which does not fall under the direct claim of Lordship by Jesus Christ. This includes how we spend our money, what entertainment we consume, how we educate our children, how we use our time, etc. All of life must be understood from within a Biblical worldview.”

Using Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism for Homeschool Bible Lessons

This book is a fantastic resource for families who want to include homeschool Bible lessons as a part of their school day. Here are a few reasons why this resource might be a great fit for your family.

Great for Building a Weekly Bible Study Routine

As a part of a busy family, I have learned how important it is to build routines around things that we want to do consistently, and Bible study is no exception. My kids and I do a Bible study together in the morning while they are eating breakfast. This is a great way to start our school day and to remember that God’s Word is the most important subject we study.

I love that way that Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism is designed to encourage families to build a Bible study routine. The book includes 52 lessons that are designed to be completed at the rate of one per week. This makes it easy to know right where we are in the book without needing to do any lesson planning.

I also love that each week’s lesson follows the same format. This made it easy for our family to choose days of the week to read the verses in depth, memorize Scripture, or study definitions of new words.

I also appreciate that there’s not too much information in a week’s lesson. Even on busy weeks, it is easy to make sure we read all the information that is provided. On weeks when we have more time, we can read each of the verses in context to dive deeper into the topic we’re studying.

Whole Family Can Learn Together

As a homeschool parent, I’m always looking for resources that my kids can use to learn together. I love that Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism is designed for families to use to study together.

Because of the way this curriculum is written, it could be used for family Bible study, for an individual study for an older child who can read independently, or even as a part of a small group Bible study.

My inquisitive 9-year-old loves the fact that each lesson starts with a question he can answer.

I love the fact that the book includes definitions for words in the Bible verses that my kids might not know, so that even when he is reading the lessons on his own, he can learn the meaning of these words.

I also like the fact that the pages are colorful and the lessons are short. This helps my 6 year old stay engaged with the lessons too (even though she’s younger than the recommended age of 8 years and up).

Strong Foundation of Truth

As a homeschool parent, I am always looking for resources that provide my children with a strong and solid foundation in their faith. We’ve used and loved several different read through the Bible curriculum options in the past, but this year, I wanted to focus on fundamental Bible truths.

Each lesson tackles significant topics such as creation, sin, salvation, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. I love that my kids are not just learning Bible stories but are also grasping the fundamental concepts of our faith. I have seen firsthand how this has helped my children to understand and communicate what they believe and why.

As I raise my kids in a world full of unbiblical teaching and confusing ideas from culture, I know how important it is to make sure that my kids have a strong understanding of truth. The comprehensive explanations and structured lessons in this book help to reinforce biblical truths in a clear and engaging way.

Points Back to the Bible

One of the key reasons I chose Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism for our homeschool Bible lessons is its strong emphasis on pointing kids back to the Bible. I want my children to not only learn about their faith but also to understand that Scripture is the source for truth.

I love that each lesson includes an answer to the question with Bible verses referenced within it. This communicates clearly that the author didn’t just make up answers to the questions based on what he believes to be true; everything comes directly from God’s Word.

Each lesson also includes the full text of the referenced verses in the King James Version. My family prefers a different translation, so this gives us the opportunity to look up the verses in our own Bibles, read them for context, and then compare the text of the verses to the King James Version that’s provided.

My kids have also enjoyed using the provided checklists to memorize the verses each week. I love that this book is encouraging my kids to memorize scripture!
