Why Should Kids Memorize Bible Verses?

Memorizing Bible verses is an important part of our homeschool. Here are a few reasons why you should consider adding scripture memory to your homeschool lessons.

1. God’s Word teaches us about Him.

What better way for your kids to learn more about God, than by studying His Word?

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

The Bible says that God is the Word, and so if we want to learn more about Him, we should study the Word.

2. Memorizing Bible verses helps us fight sin.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, what did He do? He spoke Bible verses that He had memorized! We can do this too.

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11

When we help our kids memorize Bible verses, we are giving them tools to help them fight sin in their lives.

3. Learning God’s Word teaches about good character.

Kids can learn a lot about good character through studying scripture. If they are struggling in a specific area, parents can choose verses for them to memorize about that particular character trait. This can be a great way to help them improve!

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16

4. Memorizing Bible verses helps kids learn truth.

In a culture that often tries to teach our kids lies, it is important that they know what the truth is. And, memorizing truth can help them to recognize the lies that they hear.

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

John 17:17

Memorizing Bible verses helps kids understand what they believe. It also gives them the tools to take a stand to defend their faith.

How Can Children Memorize Scripture?

Childhood is a great time for learning Bible verses. Kids tend to have an easy time memorizing things they learn. Their brains often retain information easily. This means that now is a great time to help your child learn and memorize Bible verses.

Repetition

One of the best ways to memorize something is through repetition. Kids learn new information by repeating it over and over.

Kids can repeat the information they are learning by saying it out loud, or by writing it down. Either strategy can be very helpful in using repetition to memorize.

Using Multiple Senses

In general, the more senses a person uses when they are learning something new, the more likely they will be to remember it. Especially for younger kids, learning with multiple senses can be very helpful.

This is why hands-on activities are so important for younger kids. Children memorize better when their whole body is involved in the learning process.

Using Bible Verse Tracing Sheets for Copywork

Copywork is an excellent strategy to help kids learn to memorize Bible verses. Copywork means that kids look at a written word, sentence, or paragraph and copy what they see. Sometimes, kids may even listen to text read aloud and copy what they hear.

Copywork is helpful for kids because it help them to:

  • Practice and improve handwriting, including forming letters correctly and spacing them properly
  • Learn punctuation, capitalization, and grammar by example from the text
  • Increase vocabulary
  • Improve attention to detail, focus, and memory

Bible verse copywork is a great way for kids to be exposed to new Bible verses, and to memorize the verses they are copying!

How Does Copywork Help with Memorization?

Using Bible verse tracing sheets for copywork is a great way for kids to memorize Bible verses. Copywork is an especially effective tool for memorization for several reasons.

1. Copywork engages multiple senses.

Kids who are copying with Bible verse tracing sheets are engaging multiple senses while they work.

  • They are using their sense of sight to look at the verses to copy.
  • If they read the verse out loud as they copy it, they can use their sense of hearing.
  • They are using their sense of touch as they copy the verse.

Because multiple senses are being used, the brain will be more engaged which helps with memory.

2. Copywork uses multiple learning styles.

Kids can use Bible verse tracing sheets no matter what their learning style to help them memorize verses.

  • Visual learners will learn from seeing and reading the verses.
  • Auditory learners will learn from listening as they read the verses out loud.
  • Kinesthetic learners will learn by doing as they copy the verses.

The combination of reading and writing, speaking and hearing will help kids to memorize the verses as they work on their handwriting practice sheets.

Tips for Using Bible Verse Tracing Sheets

Here are some ways to make the most out of your free Bible verse tracing sheets.

1. Make sure kids understand what they are copying.

It is important that your child understands the verse they are copying. Take an opportunity to explain any concepts or ideas that may be confusing in the verse.

This might be a great time to study the chapter that the verse came from. It can be helpful to understand scripture in the context of a larger section.

It is also important to make sure that kids know all of the words included in the scripture passage. Are there any new vocabulary words to define? Can your child read all the words in the passage? This will help with their understanding as well.

2. Re-use Bible verse tracing sheets again and again.

An easy way to turn any printable, like these tracing sheets, into a re-usable resource is with a single sheet laminator. Simply slide the page into a laminating pouch (these generic ones work just as well as the name brand). After it’s laminated, your child can write on the page with a dry-erase marker, and erase it to use over and over again.

If you don’t want to laminate your pages, you can also slip them into a plastic page protector sheet to accomplish the same result.

3. Turn it into a game.

How can you turn your Bible verse tracing sheets into a game? Consider using completed sheets like flashcards to quiz kids on the verses they know. Or, hide completed sheets around the house for your child to find. When they find one of the sheets, they can practice saying the verse out loud.

4. Collect memorized verses.

Help your child keep a running list of the Bible verses they have memorized. Maybe you can take the completed Bible verse tracing sheets and put them in a special binder or folder. Or, your child can copy the verses into the pages of a notebook.

Over time this collection of memorized Bible verses will become a special reminder of your child’s work and progress.

5. Share completed Bible verse tracing sheets with others.

How can you use completed pages to encourage friends and relatives? Consider helping your child color and decorate their completed sheets and then mail them to a relative or friend.

This is a great way to share the gift of your child’s schoolwork while encouraging someone. And it’s great motivation for your child to finish their copywork!
