Pirate Activities for Preschoolers

This is Day 8 of the Fun Summer Worksheets for Preschoolers series! You can check out the other posts in the series to find fun no-prep lessons to keep your preschooler learning all summer long! In our house, summer means fun in the sun, beaches… and pirates! My kids love these fun pirate activities for preschoolers and I’m excited to share them with you!

These activities were designed for kids in preschool, to help them learn about letters and numbers, counting and pre-reading skills, and much more. They can be adapted for toddlers through 1st graders using the suggestions included in these plans!

What You Need:

• Play dough (for the pirate counting mats)
• Counters or small objects (for the pirate counting mats)

Use the Printable Pirate Activities for Preschoolers Again and Again

It is easy to turn these pirate activities for preschoolers into a resource that you can use over and over again in your homeschool! Try these tips to make this a reusable resource.

• Print the pages on thick cardstock to make them more durable.
• Laminate the pages with a single sheet laminator and laminating pouches.
• Or, put worksheets in a dry erase pocket to protect them.
• Kids can write on laminated pages with a dry erase marker and erase when they are done.

Favorite Pirate Themed Books for Preschoolers

Pirate Clip Cards for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the clip cards. You may want to print them on thick cardstock or laminate them to make them more sturdy.
• Cut out the clip cards.
• Put clothespins in a basket.

What to Do:

These clip cards are perfect for preschoolers who are learning their letters and numbers. They can find the matching letter or number and then clip a clothespin on the correct answer.

Clip cards are great for kids who are not yet writing. Clipping a clothespin on their answer is an easy way for a child to record their answer without needing to write it down. This allows kids to work on this activity independently.

Using a clothespin is also a great way for kids to build fine motor muscle strength in their hands. This will prepare them for learning how to write!

What they will Learn:

The pirate activities for preschoolers bundle includes 2 different kinds of clip cards.

The first are count and clip cards, to help kids practice counting. Children should count how many of each object there are, and then clip the clothespin on the correct number. In addition to practicing counting, this will help kids learn to recognize and match the numbers they see.

This bundle also includes a set of alphabet clip cards. These cards have a capital letter for kids to match with the correct lowercase letter.

Matching capital and lowercase letters is an important skill for preschoolers. Kids will need to know that the corresponding capital and lowercase letters are the same so that they can read books that contain both kinds of letters.

Pirate Cutting and Tracing Practice for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the cutting and tracing practice worksheets.

What to Do:

These cutting and tracing practice worksheets are great for helping kids learn to develop scissor or pencil control. Kids can trace the dotted line with a pencil or cut along the line with scissors.

What they will Learn:

Kids can trace the line with a pencil or crayon to practice pencil control and develop fine motor muscles. This is an important skill as kids are learning how to write letters. You might want to turn the paper sideways and have your child trace from left to right, since this is the same way that they will be reading and writing text.

These worksheets are also excellent for helping kids learn how to cut. The dotted line helps kids focus on where their scissors should be going.

When your child is practicing cutting with a pirate cutting activity, make sure that you help them remember to turn the paper, and not their scissors, when the line changes directions. This makes cutting much easier, and it’s something that many kids who are learning to cut need to learn how to do.

Pirate Counting Mats for Preschoolers

Prepare:

• Gather your supplies.
• Print the counting mats.
• Laminate the counting mats or put them in dry erase pockets or page protector sheets.

What to Do:

These counting mats have lots of different possible hands-on uses. Here are a few ideas.

• Practice handwriting by writing the numbers or number words. You can laminate the counting mats and kids can use a dry erase marker to write. This is a great way to practice writing numbers!
• Use playdough to make the numbers, or to decorate the pirate ship. Hands-on activities like this are a great way to help kinesthetic learners to remember the shape of the numbers.
• Add the correct number of counters or small objects to the ten frame. This will help kids to become familiar with the ten frame, which is important later on in math.
• Add the right number of small objects to the picture. This is a fun way for kids to work on their counting skills and to practice counting with a one-to-one correspondence.

Adapt the Pirate Activities for Preschoolers for Your Kids:

For Younger Kids:

Use fewer pieces.

Instead of using all the counting mats or matching puzzles, consider working with just the numbers from 1-5. Or, use just the letters in your child’s first name. Working on learning a large amount of facts in small groups can make a daunting task more manageable for a younger child.

For Older Kids:

Put them in order.

Once your child has completed the number or letter cards or puzzles, ask them to arrange the cards in order. This is a great way to practice alphabetical order and number order as well.

Practice math facts.

Consider using these resources to help your child practice addition. You could ask your child to add the numbers on two clip cards together. Or, to solve the matching puzzles but then tell you what one more than each answer would be. The ten frames on the counting mats are great for math fact practice as well.
