Our Favorite Online Homeschool Grammar Curriculum

As a homeschool parent, I’m intimidated by the idea of teaching high school grammar to my kids. Although I have a decent background in grammar, I don’t feel qualified to teach it at a high school level. That’s why I was so excited to discover Mr. D Math American English Grammar, an online homeschool grammar curriculum that’s perfect for students in high school or middle school. What is Mr. D Math American English Grammar?

Mr. D Math American English Grammar is a beginning high school or advanced middle school language course designed to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of English grammar. The course focuses on the structure of English grammar and its usage in both spoken and written forms. It covers topics such as parts of speech, verb tenses, clauses, phrases, and sentence structures.

Students will learn how to identify and correct errors in grammar and usage, as well as how to construct well-formed sentences. By the end of the course, students will have a strong command of English grammar and be able to apply it in any context.

Vocabulary

Because strong grammar skills also require kids to have a large vocabulary and understand word usage, I love that this grammar program also includes weekly vocabulary assignments. My kids learn new words each week, and this is perfect for high schoolers who are preparing for standardized tests. Including vocabulary in the daily lessons is also an excellent way for kids to learn how to include the words in their writing.

Each week, kids learn five new words. They will complete practice exercises, printable worksheets, and quizzes to reinforce the new words and their meanings, as well as their parts of speech and usage. Older students will be able to complete the short lessons independently and learn these new words on their own.

Note Taking Using the Cornell Method of Notes

As a homeschool mom, I love that this language arts program also includes lessons in how to take notes. Note taking is a critical skill for students to learn at any grade level, and is especially important in the middle and high school years as students are preparing for college.

American English Grammar includes video lessons introducing the Cornell Method of Notetaking, as well as follow up assignments to make sure that kids are taking notes on the daily grammar lessons using the Cornell style.

The Cornell Method of notetaking is a method of taking and organizing notes developed by Professor Walter Pauk of Cornell University. The method features a specific format that allows students to take notes efficiently and effectively by writing down key points, summarizing them on the side, and reflecting on the material after the class. It is widely used by students, teachers, and professionals and can help improve comprehension, recall, and retention of information. The method includes writing a summary at the bottom of each page, which serves as a reminder of the main ideas. The Cornell Method also encourages students to reflect on the material, which helps to solidify understanding and increase engagement.

I love that this course includes note taking skills! This is one of the most important life skills my kids will need to practice, and I love that the curriculum teaches kids how to take notes.

I love the way that the course materials are organized into sequential lessons. Kids learn grammar concepts step by step, and this totally eliminates the need to do any lesson planning as a part of your child’s grammar study.

Thorough High School Grammar Knowledge

As a former classroom teacher, I love the way that American English Grammar includes a complete curriculum, working through all the skills kids will need to understand in their study of grammar. The lessons are organized with a systematic approach so that kids’ grammar skills will build over time, and nothing gets skipped.

American English Grammar could be used for a full year as a complete language arts curriculum for a student in middle or high school, or supplemented with daily reading and writing skills practice as well.

Designed for Multiple Learning Styles

When I’m choosing a curriculum for our homeschool, I’m always looking for resources that include a variety of different options for learning, and American English Grammar definitely fits the description.

Kids do most of their learning through video lessons, which are taught by Jenni Stahlmann, the creator of From Cradle to Calling. Each lesson also comes with written notes so that visual learners can follow along with the text, and Jenni often uses example sentences to help kids understand the new concepts in each lesson.

During the lessons, kids take notes using the Cornell Method of Notetaking, which helps them remember key points from the grammar instruction each day.

Assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams give kids plenty of opportunity to practice and review all the new information that they are learning about the English language.
