The Best Preschool Bible Resources for Your Homeschool

Bible study is an important priority in our homeschool, even for my preschoolers. There are a huge variety of preschool Bible study resources out there. Here are our favorite resources, and how we use them in our homeschool.

Best Preschool Bibles

#1: The Jesus Storybook Bible

The Jesus Storybook Bible is my absolute favorite for preschool and elementary-aged kids.  I love that every single story points to Jesus in some way.  This Bible clearly emphasizes that the whole Bible is one big story of God’s plan of redemption for people.  The pictures in this book are also really fun and engaging for preschoolers. 

#2: My First Hands-On Bible

I am using the My First Hands-on Bible right now with my kids.  I love that it makes it so easy to teach kids the story.  Colored icons throughout the text provide ideas for how to get kids involved.  In the story of Noah and the flood, for example, kids make rain sounds with their hands, walk like an elephant, and pretend they are rocking back and forth in a big boat.  Each story ends with questions to discuss, additional activities to try, and a prayer.  I also love that this Bible uses actual verses from the NLT- a rarity for preschool Bibles!

#3: The Beginner’s Bible

We just finished reading through The Beginner’s Bible with my son, who has been reading for about a year.  I loved this Bible because I had him read the stories to me.  We talked often about how important it is to be able to read so that you can read the Bible for yourself.  My son was so proud to be able to do this!  If your child is new to reading, you could also alternate pages or use this Bible as part of your reading practice. 

Ten Tips for Using a Preschool Bible to Teach Your Kids

Now that you have selected the perfect preschool Bible for your family, what should you do next? These tips will help you get started with Bible study with your preschooler.

1. Read the Bible yourself

It is important that you are also spending time on a regular basis reading God’s word. As the saying goes, it is hard to give to others what you do not have yourself. The more you study on your own, the more you will be inspired to read with your preschooler.

You can also share what you are learning with your preschooler. Share your favorite encouraging Bible verses or what you are learning from your own study. Your child may be inspired to spend more time studying the Bible when they see you doing it, too.

2. Create a routine

One of the most important things about Bible study with your preschooler is to create a routine and be consistent. Choose a time in your day when you can add Bible reading to your daily routine.

Some families like to do this first thing in the morning, or right after breakfast. The most important thing is to find a time that will work for your family, so that you can remember to do it consistently.

3. Find a good preschool Bible

It is important to choose a Bible that’s age appropriate and engaging for your preschooler. But, you will also need a Bible that has good information and inspires your child to read and learn more.

In most cases, a good preschool Bible is all you need for Bible study with your preschooler. Sometimes, you might want to supplement with a good Bible study curriculum. There are even lots of great resources for free preschool curriculum for Bible study!

4. Keep preschool Bible lessons short

A preschooler’s attention span is still very short, so it is important to keep Bible reading time short too. Choose to read less, but spend more time making sure that your child understands what they have read.

Your preschool Bible time could be as short as 5 minutes and usually shouldn’t be longer than about 20 minutes at the most. The key is to be consistent and read daily, so that you can continue to make progress a little bit at a time.

Choosing a good Christian homeschool curriculum that includes Bible lessons can also help with this.

5. Make it fun

Fun Bible lessons are a great way to help your child learn to love God’s Word, and get excited to study it. Preschoolers also learn best when they are having fun.

Preschoolers love hands-on activities. Asking your child to act out the story you read, or build the story with blocks and toys, can be a great way to get them engaged.

Kids might also enjoy a craft or snack that’s related to the story. Try to find one that connects to the theme you are reading about, like these Noah’s Ark activities when you read about Noah.

6. Explain new ideas from your preschool Bible

Make sure that you take time as a part of each lesson to make sure that your child understands what you have read. Are there new vocabulary words that they don’t know? Are there new concepts they might not understand? Take time to explain these things to your child.

7. Keep it age appropriate

When homeschooling preschool, it is important to remember that preschoolers are very literal. That means that if you say something like “invite Jesus to live in your heart” your child might actually think that there will be a tiny person living inside them!

It is best to make sure that you speak very literally when you are explaining concepts to your child. Keep your explanations simple. Ask lots of questions to see what your child understands, and be prepared to answer lots of questions too! If you don’t know the answer, it is ok to research the answer together with your child.

8. Focus on the Gospel

During preschool Bible time, the Gospel should be the focus. If your child hasn’t yet come to a saving faith in Jesus, the most important thing you can teach them is about the Gospel. Your child will have the rest of their life to learn the rest of the Bible, once they come to faith in Him.

When sharing the Gospel, keep things simple and relatable to your child. I like to talk about the idea of punishment for doing something wrong, since that’s usually something preschoolers are very familiar with. Phrases like “Jesus was punished for what you did wrong, instead of you,” help preschoolers understand in a simple way.

9. Memorize scripture

Preschoolers are not too young to memorize scripture! Songs that use Bible verses as lyrics are especially helpful for preschoolers. Kids who are learning to write and practicing handwriting can use scripture copywork and Bible verse tracing sheets as well.

10. End your preschool Bible time with prayer

Make sure you take time after each lesson to pray with and for your preschooler. This is an important time in their lives. Pray that God would help them to learn from His Word and come to faith in Him.
