Christmas in Different Countries
Studying the Christmas celebrations in different parts of the world is a fun way to help kids understand different cultures. Here are some fun facts to add to your lesson plans. You can check off these countries on a printable passport as you study them.
Language
Christmas is a fun time to learn about different languages by learning how people in various countries say Merry Christmas.
For example, families in the Netherlands say Prettige Kerstdagen. In the Philippines they say Maligayang Pasko, and in Mexico, they say Feliz Navidad.
A fun social studies lesson would be to use the printable worksheets to create graphic organizers showing a traditional Christmas greeting in each language.
Decorations
Although many countries decorate with Christmas trees and Christmas lights, each country has its own unique Christmas decorations and holiday traditions as well.
The city of Naples, Italy is known for its beautiful nativity scenes. Families wait unit Christmas Eve of add the baby Jesus to their nativity scene.
Families in Mexico decorate with piñatas for Las Posadas. The piñatas often have seven spikes which represent the seven deadly sins.
Traditional Characters
Although Santa Claus is a popular Christmas character around the world, he goes by different names in different cultures. He is called Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and Father Christmas in Ireland. Most Christmas traditions agree that he comes from the north pole to deliver presents on Christmas morning.
Some cultures have some unique and interesting Christmas characters. La Befana is a kind witch who brings presents to kids in Italy on Ephiphany. Irish families honor St. Stephen on December 26th, St. Stephen’s day.
Food and Treats
Christmas customs around the world tell us that although many families eat Christmas dinners, the foods they serve are different.
Kids in the Philippines celebrate Noche Buena with a roast pig, while families in Germany enjoy stollen, a Christmas fruit pastry. You can even learn more about Christmas in Germany for kids by finding a recipe to try to make one at home!
Christmas Traditions
Each country has different Christmas traditions that make their celebrations unique and special.
Families in the Philippines celebrate 9 days of Christmas with church services every night leading up to Christmas Eve. One of kids’ favorite traditions in Italy is to travel from house to house dressed as shepherds singing Christmas songs. They are remembering the shepherds who came to visit baby Jesus.
