Sonlight Butterfly Unit Study for Homeschool
The Butterfly Unit Study from Sonlight is a complete open-and-go resource designed specifically for homeschool families. It comes with everything you need to complete the unit study, and I love that all the materials for the unit study were mailed to our house in one box. This package includes an Instructor’s Guide, picture books, activity sheets, lapbook supplies and templates, a butterfly habitat, and craft supplies. Live caterpillars are not included in the kit.
The unit study lasts for 4 weeks, and each week focuses on a specific stage in the butterfly life cycle. From the egg to the larva, pupa, and adult stages, kids will have a great time studying the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. They will also learn about topics such as butterfly habitats and food, parts of the caterpillar and butterfly, camouflage, and more. This in-depth exploration of the butterfly’s life cycle provides kids with a thorough understanding of these fascinating creatures.

I love the fact that the Butterfly Unit Study uses a multidisciplinary approach. This means that each day’s lessons include a variety of different subjects. Through reading picture books, children practice their reading skills. The study also incorporates science lessons about the biology of butterflies. In addition, children have the opportunity to engage in hands-on crafts that reinforce the concepts they learn. The unit study even includes butterfly-themed snack recipes! I love the way that this unit study makes sure that kids get a well-rounded education, while keeping them involved and making learning fun at the same time.

Raising Caterpillars and Butterflies with Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study
As a homeschool parent, I am always looking for engaging and hands-on learning experiences that spark my kids’ curiosity. My kids have been interested in butterflies ever since the first time we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. So, when I discovered Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study, I knew it would be a perfect fit for our family. Despite our interest in butterflies, we had never had the opportunity to raise our own butterflies before, so this unit study was an exciting new adventure for us.
We ordered a cup of caterpillars, and as soon as they arrived, our kitchen quickly turned into butterfly central. We watched as the tiny caterpillars grew, formed chrysalides, and eventually emerged as beautiful butterflies. My kids were so excited to observed each stage of the butterfly life cycle, and it was so much fun to be able to watch the butterflies’ transformations up close.
I loved the way that each week’s activities in the unit study corresponded to the different stages in our caterpillars’ life cycles, so we were able to learn about butterfly eggs, the larva stage, the pupa stage, and the adult butterfly as we observed them in our home. The unit study kit was a great addition to the butterfly-raising experience that made it even more meaningful for my family.

The Butterfly That Got Away
We had some unexpected excitement (and a bit of panic) when one of our butterflies managed to escape from its enclosure. Even though my son was not able to catch the butterfly with his butterfly net, we did catch the butterfly in our living room and release it outside the next day.
After this experience, I learned that we could have set up our enclosure differently to prevent this from happening to us. If you’re considering raising your own butterflies, I highly recommend checking out this video from Sonlight on how to set up the enclosure to prevent any potential escapes:
Reasons Why We Love Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study
I think that raising butterflies with Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study is my favorite thing that I have ever done in our homeschool- and I’m pretty sure that my kids would say the same. Here are a few reasons why we absolutely love this resource:

Real-Life Application
One of the best aspects of Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study is the opportunity for kids to raise their own caterpillars and witness the amazing process of metamorphosis firsthand. As we followed the lesson plans and learned about the different stages of the butterfly life cycle, our own caterpillars were completing the same stages of their life cycle in our kitchen.
This real-life application of what we were learning made the lessons come alive and deepened our understanding of the butterfly life cycle. It was a hands-on experience that we will never forget.

Learning Through Reading
Because my kids and I love to read books together, reading time is always the highlight of our homeschool day. That’s why I love that Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study includes beautiful picture books.
These stories are carefully chosen so they they are engaging and interesting for kids, while also including valuable information about butterflies. I loved that the books had beautiful illustrations and age-appropriate text. They were great resources for morning baskets or circle time with the whole family, or for one-on-one reading sessions.
As we followed the lesson plans, we spent a lot of time reading and re-reading the stories that were included with the unit study kit.

Hands-On Butterfly Activities
One of my favorite features of Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study is that it also includes a variety of hands-on activities that make learning interactive and enjoyable. The butterfly kit provides everything you need to engage your children in exciting butterfly-themed crafts and projects.
From creating a colorful clothespin caterpillar with pom poms and then turning it into a butterfly using pipe cleaners and coffee filters to making a butterfly snack, the hands-on activities in this unit study bring the lessons to life in the best way possible. The detailed lesson plans guide you through each activity, and all the necessary supplies are included in the box (even the glue!).
The unit study also comes with butterfly worksheets and templates to make a lapbook, which is a great way for children of all ages to show what they are learning about caterpillars and butterflies during the unit. Activities like lapbooks not only reinforce the concepts being taught but also encourage creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection with the subject matter. My son had a lot of fun putting the lapbook together, and now that it is finished, he is enjoying reading it and remembering how our butterflies transformed from tiny eggs into beautiful butterflies.

Sonlight’s Butterfly Unit Study is designed for elementary students in grades 2-6, but I love that it is easy to adapt for younger or older kids, which is perfect for mixed-age homeschooling families. This flexibility allows multiple children to enjoy each butterfly life cycle activity together. I love that that this unit study provided opportunities for both of my children to engage and learn at their own levels.
For my older son, the unit study offered more in-depth scientific exploration. The unit study’s lesson plans provided clear guidance and resources for him to explore the butterfly life cycle.
Meanwhile, my younger daughter was able to participate in a simplified version of the lessons and engage in hands-on activities suitable for her age. By participating in this unit study together, my children not only learned about butterflies but also developed valuable skills such as collaboration, observation, and critical thinking. I love that this unit study encouraged a love for learning for both my kids and brought our family closer together as they shared the experience of raising and learning about the butterflies.
