Fall Read Aloud Books for Homeschoolers

There’s nothing like the colder weather to make me want to curl up under a blanket with a good book- and lately my kids have been feeling the same way! Here’s a few of the best fall read aloud books for homeschoolers. All these books come recommended by teachers- and loved by kids!

Preschool Fall Read Aloud Books for Homeschoolers

Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington

This book tells the story of Jamie, who plants a pumpkin seed. He watches his seed grow into a bigger and bigger plant. Finally a pumpkin grows that Jamie can carve for Halloween. The book ends with him saving seeds from his pumpkin to plant again in the spring.

Why we love it:

The illustrations in this book are simple, but beautiful. I love the way this book shows the life cycle of the plant from seed to pumpkin and back to seed again. It’s a great first lesson about plants for preschoolers.

Autumn by Gerda Muller

This is a wordless picture book that has beautiful illustrations of the season and things kids might do in fall. The kids in the book are enjoying the season by flying kites, eating apples, playing in the leaves, and more. Preschoolers will love talking about the pictures in this book!

Why we love it:

Wordless picture books are GREAT for developing readers! Kids can “read” the book by sharing what they notice in the pictures. When you talk with your child about the pictures in a wordless book, you are helping them build language skills, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Leaves by David Ezra Stein

This book tells the story of a bear’s first fall. He is confused that the leaves are falling off the trees and finally decides to go to sleep. When he wakes up it is spring, and he finds that new leaves are beginning to grow!

Why we love it:

This story is simple enough that my son can read it on his own. Our favorite part is when the bear tries to stick the leaves back in the tree. I may or may not have caught someone trying to do that here!

Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell

This book tells the story of a girl who visits the farm with her family. She picks apples and chooses the perfect pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern- just in time for Halloween! This is a sweet and simple fall themed book perfect for preschoolers.

Why we love it:

We take our kids to the farm to pick apples- and a pumpkin- every year. We love reading this book before our trip to get the kids excited about it, and afterwards so we can remember all the fun we had. My kids love it whenever they can relate to the characters in the books. They love that they have done the same things that the girl in this book is doing!

From classic activities like visiting the orchard to unique ideas like this apple volcano science experiment, it’s easy to celebrate fall with books like this one!

Leaf Jumpers by Carole Gerber

This book is written as a poem and includes beautiful illustrations of the different fall leaves. The kids observe the leaves with their five senses, rake them into a pile, and jump in the leaves.

Why we love it:

This book includes names and pictures of eight different common kinds of leaves. It’s the perfect introduction to identifying leaves for younger elementary aged kids. This would be a perfect book to read before a nature walk to collect leaves and identify them. Then, follow up with some fall alphabet activities for a perfect fall lesson.

Fall Mixed Up by Robert Raczka

This book is a poem about things that happen in fall- but it’s filled with all sorts of silly mistakes! From squirrels that fly south for the winter to neighbors that give out Thanksgiving dinner food for Halloween, kids will love laughing at- and correcting- the mistakes.

Why we love it:

This book is hysterical for preschoolers! They love it when things aren’t as they should be- and when they are “in on the joke” and can correct the mistake. This one is still funny, no matter how many times we read it.

From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer

This nonfiction book shows the life cycle of a pumpkin from seed to plant to pumpkin and back to seed. There are lots of details about how pumpkins grow to satisfy a curious learner.

Why we love it:

This book has a little bit more detail in it which makes it perfect for a lower elementary aged child who wants to know more about how pumpkins grow. The book uses simple language which keeps it easy to understand for a younger reader.

Fall Read Aloud Books for Elementary Aged Homeschoolers

Why Do Leaves Change Color? by Betsy Maestro

This nonfiction book explains why leaves change color in the fall. There are lots of details here- this book is appropriate for an older elementary school aged child. The book also includes some ideas for activities that kids can do with leaves in the fall.

Why we love it:

My son is at the age where he is asking “why?” ALL. THE. TIME. Here’s the answer to at least one of his “why” questions this season- with enough detail to satisfy his curiosity.

Awesome Autumn by Bruce Goldstone

This is a great nonfiction book that explores the science behind the season. Beautiful photographs help explain why leaves change color and fall off the trees, how frost is formed, why birds fly south, and more.

Why we love it:

This book has SO MUCH information! It goes beyond the basics about the life cycle of a pumpkin and includes topics like hibernation and frost. The back of the book also includes ideas for crafts and activities to do in the fall.

Look What I Did With a Leaf by Morteza Sohi

This book shows kids how to choose the perfect leaf to use in an art project. The photographs give lots of ideas for how to combine a variety of leaves to make different animals. This is a great idea book for art projects.

Why we love it:

This book is the perfect fall read aloud book for homeschoolers’ art lessons! We are always looking for something to do with the leaves we collect on nature walks this time of year. This book gives us lots of ideas for fall family fun, and incorporates art concepts as well.
